At last, David Seidner is receiving well-deserved recognition with a comprehensive solo exhibition. The celebrated portraitist and fashion photographer, famous for his opulent and meticulously crafted visuals, evokes the essence of 19th-century artworks in many of his creations. His masterpieces frequently graced the pages of Vanity Fair, particularly his neoclassical portrayals of societal luminaries like the Miller sisters, iconic figures like Gwyneth Paltrow and her talented mother, actress Blythe Danner, and his grand VF collection that portrayed 18 descendants of artist John Singer Sargent’s former muses – including luminaries such as actor Helena Bonham Carter and journalist Anderson Cooper – captured in a style reminiscent of Sargent’s canvases a century ago.

Shortly after Seidner’s passing in 1999 due to an AIDS-related illness, his legacy was acquired by the New York International Center for Photography. As the institution commemorates its 50th anniversary, Elizabeth Sherman, The ICP’s venerable curator and head of exhibitions and collections, presents a remarkable, definitive exhibition available until the start of May, showcasing a career that fearlessly navigated through the realms of fashion, portraiture, fine arts, still life, and experimental photography, always capturing the external allure and intrinsic allure of the subjects.

Highlighted here is a curated assortment from the showcase “David Seidner: Fragments, 1977–99” along with the ICP’s extensive permanent collection.
