The good doctor answers his last call. The seventh and final season premieres on February 20th and begins with new chapters opening for many of the series' characters. Hollywood life spoke exclusively with co-showrunner Liz Friedman about the final season – including Shaun and Lea's first weeks as parents to baby Steven.

“When we meet Shaun and Lea, it's been about two weeks,” Liz said of the start of season seven. “Both learn the challenges and joys of parenthood. We wanted to find out how Shaun is really great at this. We talked to our autism consultant about this and she said, “Definitely there are a lot of parents who, especially when they have a baby, there are things about babies that you can't control, and there are a lot of them.” You you can actually control it. Shaun believes in a schedule and he keeps it moving. In fact, the first real challenge for Shaun and Lea is that they both have different approaches to it and how planned or unplanned they want to be.”

As Shaun adjusts to fatherhood, he simultaneously juggles his career as a doctor and his fractured relationship with Glassman. Their relationship reached a low point when Shaun Dr. Lim revealed Glassman's cognitive problems. Liz noted that Shaun and Glassman will “find their way back to each other,” but it won't be an easy path.

“If you see them at the beginning of the season, they still don’t really get along,” Liz said Hollywood life. “Both of them, I think, still have big feelings about what happened at the end of last season. They will find each other again, but it won't happen all at once. They both have some things they need to navigate and some things they need to tell each other. I think it’s going to be a really interesting and emotional journey for her.”

Now that he's retired from surgery, Glassman will “try to figure out how to spend his time.” The EP added: “Much to his dismay, he will end up with more administrative responsibilities than he would like, but I think he is trying to find the next chapter of his life.”

At the end of season six, Jordan sacrifices his relationship with Danny to save his life. Although Danny, a recovering addict, had asked doctors not to give him painkillers after a car accident, Jordan eventually gave him the medication that was supposed to help him. Danny left St. Bonaventure to live with his family in Texas.

“Jordan will begin the year still grappling with the decision she made at the end of last season to sacrifice some of her relationship with Danny to keep him alive,” Liz teased. “But this won’t be the last challenge she faces. That’s about what I can tell you right now.”

Similar to Shaun and Lea, Morgan and Park embark on the journey of parenthood as a couple. “Morgan and Park give us another opportunity to explore how adding a child can change the dynamic,” the co-showrunner revealed. “They are a different couple than Shaun and Leah. The open argument was one of the reasons they were attracted to each other in the first place. And now that they're teaming up to be this great parenting team for Eden, it's going to put other aspects of their relationship into question. We came up with some really fun things.”

The good doctor has become one of ABC's most popular medical dramas, so fans were surprised when it was announced that the series would be ending after Season 7. “If I may quote my co-showrunner David Shore, ABC told us it was time to end the show, so that's one of the main reasons,” Liz replied when asked why the show was ending. “But what was really great and what we really appreciate is that they told us in such a timely manner and in the way that we could finish the show the way we wanted and start knowing that that we do that. We look forward to giving Shaun Murphy a great ending to his story.”

When asked whether or not we'll see fan-favorite characters like Claire and Andrews again at some point in the final season, Liz cryptically replied, “Well, we'll have to wait and see.”

The final season is just beginning and The good doctor The team is still putting the finishing touches on the show's ending. “We’re still shaping it. I mean, we have a good idea of it, but it evolves until you shoot it, right? And then it can evolve a little bit in the editing room,” Liz said. The good doctor airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on ABC.
